Junior Execs: Encouraging an Entrepreneurial Spirit

As the publishers of West Virginia Executive, we are constantly meeting wonderful people who take on great things, and although they may not have always found success, they’ve always found knowledge, strength and motivation. Over the last several months, we have met several outstanding individuals—individuals all under the age of 18!—who have taken on particularly difficult roles as entrepreneurs. These underage executives have taken hobbies and interests and pushed the limits to discover the passion and dedication of running a successful business or marketing endeavor. Here you will discover their personal steps of success—their inspiration, motivation and execution—and where their hard work will be taking them.

The name Robert C. Byrd is legendary across the country. Byrd’s oratorical talent and love of knowledge have made him a unique participant on Capitol Hill. Some may not agree with his views or like his style of leadership, but here in West Virginia the fruits of his more than 60 years of political labor are seen on numerous federal and university buildings and federal infrastructure projects across the state. Advertisers featured in this issue’s special tribute section to Senator Byrd represent just a fraction of the businesses that have reaped the benefits of having this outspoken statesman represent West Virginians in Washington, D.C.

South of the Border: An Adventure in Education

After several months of English classes, an hour and a half of English studies daily and additional practice outside the classroom, Luis was still not confident in his ability to speak the language. Carrying on conversations with his fellow students as well as his teachers and even visiting with Americans who had no formal knowledge of Spanish wasn’t quite enough to confirm to Luis that he could speak English. He needed an opportunity outside the comfort of the institute where he studied to prove to himself what he was capable of. That opportunity came quickly, and not only would the outcome confirm his knowledge of English but it would also decide the next step in his career. After nearly finishing his studies at a local university, Luis had his first serious job interview.

Transforming the Classroom

These are exciting times in the educational arena. Even with the economic downturn, there is still a very real sense of hope and optimism as visionaries look at the possibilities to catapult education forward. For many years, research was focused on reforms to meet the educational challenges; however, with the growing awareness of the global economy and global competitiveness, reform is no longer an option.

A Warm Welcome: WVU's New President

Every business and organization has growing pains and West Virginia University is no exception. Recently, WVU has faced some trying times, but with the election of a new president they are ready to move ahead. Aligning perfectly with West Virginia Executive’s education issue we wanted to take this opportunity to help make the statewide introductions on behalf of the new president, Dr. James Clements. We also wanted to show appreciation for Dr. Peter Magrath and all his hard work while serving as interim president. With the collaborative vision of not only these two men but everyone involved with life on the campus, WVU is ready to begin the next chapter. We hope you enjoy meeting Dr. Clements and will show him and his family what being a Mountaineer is all about.
