50 Most Powerful

10
Betty Ireland

Recent national elections have illustrated the necessity for competency in the position for Secretary of State, as our friends in Florida and Michigan would surely attest. Tall in stature and strong in will, Secretary Ireland can often become the strongest energy in the room. She would have been a shoo-in for re-election but has decided to take a step back and focus on her family. We are confident, however, that Secretary Ireland will return to public forum soon and she has every intention of remaining active in the pursuit of improving West Virginia's national status.

9
Alan Mollohan

Rising like the phoenix from the ashes, Congressman Mollohan perfectly reflects the saying "What doesn't kill us makes us stronger." Without question, many lessons have been learned, and he continues to be a driving force in the economic development of the northern technology corridor, which now boasts recognized organizations such as NASA, Northup Gorman and the FBI. The Congressman's vision has proven to be correct. Above all else he has established an economic platform that ensures the region's bright future.

8
Gayle Manchin

Manchin, West Virginia's First Lady, has jumped 15 positions to number 8 in "50 Most Powerful." This is due in great part to her active role in reshaping West Virginia's future. She is an ideal combination of grace, strength and intelligence. Her public speaking ability is surpassed only by her ability to negotiate. One of her greatest assets is her personality, which makes her a pleasure to be around. Her chameleon-like personality generates an environment that makes everyone comfortable. Oftentimes the business of government is a business of whispers and no one is more artful at this aptitude than our First Lady.

7
Nick Rahall

Congressmen Rahall continues to fight the battle for his district. His knowledge of the Middle East is vital to our nation's foreign policy programs and he has proven himself to be a worthy ambassador. The economic outlook for Southern West Virginia continues to improve. He remains true to his economic development vision: The 3-T Approach (technology, transportation and tourism.) His vision is the pathway for long-term success for Southern West Virginia. All West Virginia leaders need to become increasingly active in shaping our nation's energy policies, because this issue deserves a collaborative effort.

6
Marshall Reynolds

Reynolds has just added The Herald-Dispatch to his business portfolio and we have already seen improvements in its direction and content. Reynolds has a reputation as a tough-as-nails business person who demands excellence from all; however, he is one of the first to write a check when a worthy cause catches his attention. The word "empire" applies to his business holdings and net worth. We hope that with Reynolds' help Huntington will have a renewed energy to continue to promote itself outside of Cabell County.

5
Milan Puskar

A true renaissance man, Puskar's interests are diversified and he continues to have the golden touch when it comes to investments. Young in spirit, his fire still burns when he hears a fresh idea. He continues to be a champion of philanthropic causes. No one who reaches this pinnacle goes without opposition, however, Puskar thrives on pressure and continues to rise above it. He exercises his power and influence on an as-needed basis and does not hesitate to take a stand to support a good cause. His business savvy is truly legendary and he is a great asset to the state of West Virginia.

4
Richard Adams

Moving up three places as Chairman and CEO of United Bankshares, this star continues to rise nationally. United Bank has successfully navigated these murky waters and has come out stronger than ever before. Not to say that they have not had their bumps in the road, but Adams's ability to forecast and interpret trends has kept United Bank in a growth mode. United Bank's slogan, "West Virginia's Bank," is more than just words. Time and time again, United Bank has stepped up to act as a crucial component of advancing economic development in West Virginia. We are thankful for their continued commitment to the state of West Virginia and believe they are the ideal model for other West Virginia businesses to follow.

3
Robert C. Byrd

Those of you who follow the magazine and the "50 Most Powerful" understand that our top three remain the same. Many would argue and have taken issue with us, claiming that Senator Robert C. Byrd is the most powerful person in West Virginia's history. We do not disagree. We share their passion and appreciation for what he has done for West Virginia, and if anyone is worthy of all of our respect, it is he. However, given the circumstances and challenges that he has faced over the last few years, we believe that our ranking is correct. There is no doubt that Senator Byrd is one of the most powerful people in West Virginia and always has West Virginia's best interest at heart and we wish him all the best.

2
Jay Rockefeller

An interesting twist to "50 Most Powerful" would be to change the title to West Virginians on the National Stage. Senator Rockefeller would clearly deserve a number one ranking. Not only does he hold strong for our nation but also our state. He constantly dedicates his time and treasure for the greater benefit of West Virginia. Senator Rockefeller is considered one of our nation's most respected intellects on international affairs. His stature and intellect often intimidate others, but rest assured that he is approachable and cares. As the nation becomes increasingly aware of our failed energy policies, Senator Rockefeller can play a vital role in putting our nation on the right path to protecting America's interest in this global marketplace.

1
Joe Manchin III

Certainly the most powerful governor in West Virginia's most recent history, he has proven his leadership through measurable first-term accomplishments. His magnanimous support breeches all walks of life. His on-job performance combined with his undeniable magnetism has earned him a spot on the national stage, which is a good thing for him, unlike for some who have preceded him. Governor Manchin's boundless energy and contagious optimism make him West Virginia's best ambassador. It's not just that he is optimistic about West Virginia; it is that he is truly passionate about doing what is best for the state. No detail is too small, no challenge too big. He is actively involved in all levels of government and has raised the bar of performance in all state agencies. Inspiration is the catalyst that drives all dramatic change. We are blessed to have such an inspirational governor.
