Pick Up America's Recycle Mountain September 13 At The State Capital

After a long, arduous trek through West Virginia, the members of Pick Up America will celebrate by constructing a mountain of recyclables on the grounds of the West Virginia State Capital. RECYCLE MOUNTAIN is an environmental art project intended to encourage the passage of a "Bottle Bill" for the great state of West Virginia. The mountain will be constructed from 11:30 -1 PM on the capital grounds and left on display until 4 pm, before we destroy it and recycle it's contents.

We will rally from 1-3 pm with guest speakers and music. All participants and a schedule for the rally will be announced on Tuesday August 31st

SCHEDULE

11 AM - Meet at Haddad Riverfront Park to carry Recyclables 2 miles to the Capital. This walk is meant to signify how hard we must work to preserve the beautiful mountains and rivers of West Virginia. We hope to assemble a rag-tag marching band to keep us fired up during our walk.

11:30 AM - Begin constructing RECYCLE MOUNTAIN at the fountain area in the center of the capital grounds.

1 PM - Finish constructing the mountain and begin the rally.

3 PM - Finish the rally

4 PM - All natural things in life will eventually be destroyed and their particles recycled into the the never-ending stream of life. Recylce montain will be recycled at the Kanawha County Solid Waste Authority's recycle plant.

We know that a clean and healthy West Virginia needs a bottle bill so that people won't discard their recyclables all over these beautiful mountains and rivers. Let's show West Virginian decision makers the collateral damage from not having responsible policies.

The mountain will be constructed with all of the recyclables PUA collects on 85 miles of Midland Trail (US-60) in Kanawha, Putnam, and Cabel Counties, WV. The pile of "discarded resources" will be adorned with the groups vision for a sustainable future in West Virginia. We will be using aluminum cans to construct animals, wind turbines, homes, people, trees, and even a tributary system to bring our mountain to life!! If you would like to add to this vision bring a piece of art (any medium) and find it's home on recycle mountain.

If you would like to help with this community art and performance project, please contact PUA at pickupamerica@gmail.com.

This event is a sponsored by Pick Up America, West Virginia Citizen Action Group, The Habitat for Humanity Restore in Charleston, The Kanawha County Solid Waste Authority, The Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition, and Mark Blumenstein.
